Devlog with Donovan #2 - The Daily Grind

Hello everyone! It’s already time for the second Our Town Devlog! We’ve been doing a lot of fishing lately and have reeled in some big updates for you all!

First things first - players will now control a person on a bike (not truck). I know, I know, the truck was great, but we felt that a newspaper delivery kid on a bike was much more fitting for our setting and more fun to control. It also gives the player more opportunities to explore the town. Our programmer and 3D modeler/animator have  been working tirelessly to bring this new character to life!

Our 3D modeler/animator has been cleaning up new 3D character models for all our Non-Playable Characters (NPCs). These characters resemble their 2D counterparts more and will be more present in our 3D world.

Secondly - we refined and are implementing our new deduction system as we speak (as you read this). Throughout the game players will have to solve a “Mini Mystery” at the beginning of each day. These mysteries will include point-and-click scenes and the gathering of evidence and “scoops” - resident testimonies that can be interpreted how you like. Players will then use this information to guide them through the mystery - therefore possibly leading them through alternate routes and branching storylines. At the end of the day players will use what they have discovered to write the next day’s headlining story. But players must be careful - what you write may impact your relationship with certain characters.

Our UI Artist has been working alongside our programmer and narrative lead to ensure that this system has a clean visual flow and is easy to follow for all audiences to use! Their artful creations have inspired and lead most of Our Town’s art direction.

On the topic of art, our 2D environments have come a long way! They are moving onto their final drafts! These environments have been refined for easier readability and so they match our established art style. We hope the additions of evidence and other fun props will make the world feel more alive.

And last, but not least, our town’s map has also made great progress! Originally viewed from a fixed angle, we've chosen to pivot to a 360 degree camera for a more fulfilling traversal experience. You can expect to find more construction sites as Mayor Ashcroft is working hard to bring new businesses and housing developments to Our Town!

Whew! That was a lot! I hope you caught all that - if you didn’t catch up with us on our socials! We are posting every week.

Good Golly - we got a big one biting the line now! Gotta go - it’s gonna take the whole team to reel this one in!

Fish Truck Studios, signing off!
